Mike Rowe of Discovery Channel's, Dirty Jobs is featured in three brief segments in the documentary, The Tradesmen: Making an Art of Work. The film is being distributed to 5,000 schools nationally as part of Engineers week. Chapter One on the educational DVD is titled, We Have Waged a War on Work: a title taken from Mike's thought provoking commentary.

I am sure that most everyone agrees that "we have waged a war on work", but that the opinions for why vary. What cultural, social, and/or economic forces does the forum participants feel are the reasons for this sentiment against work? This may explain why a skills shortage exists.

To see what the filmmaker of the documentary suggests, you can visit the website (listed below):

'success on private work hinges on the builder’s ability to add value for their clients"

Excellent point! There are a dozen contractors who could handle that homeowner's project, why should they pick you? While price point is a big incentive, that isn't going to be the only deciding factor.

Great article, I must make one point though. With an emerging field growing as rapidly as the green industry is, I can't help but to consider a green bubble in the future. With federal stimulus funds and private investors pouring money into the industry, it would be wise to proceed with caution when looking to capitalize on this market. For comparison, think back to the early 90's when tech companies and the internet promised to change the world. Well, it did but not without a hiccup, hence the dot.com bubble. Tech companies grew faster than nature thought they should and the bubble reset the industry. Green tech has a bright future, but when planning for the future as an investor or business, plan carefully.

CompWest Insurance works through a small list of partner brokers. The power of caring for injured workers is as significant today and in the future and keeps injured workers as a vital productive employee on the job. The California marketplace is indeed a tough place to do business. Workers' compensation is just one area that can impact a business owner's bottom line. Unemployment has reached and sustained double digit levels, industry loss costs in Workers' Compensation continues to escalate, driven by increasing medical costs and the economy has everyone looking at the their bottom line. It is in the best interest of every owner, executive, and manager to be proactive when they are talking with their insurance broker about their insurance policies.

At this time, CompWest Insurance Company does not insure construction and skilled trade industries. Some of our appointed brokers have specialists that are familiar with the needs of these industries and would be able to direct you to an appropriate market for Workers’ Compensation coverage.

Sincerely,

Kristi Houston
Marketing Manager
CompWest Insurance Company
Workers' Compensation with Care ®
Ph. 714.641.9570
khouston@compwestinsurance.com
